Como usar WISH e sua estrutura

Hey you guys! What’s up?

Today we are learning the situations in which we use the word WISH.

I’m sure you’ve heard it and even used it. But do you know all the structures and grammar rules concerning it? Let’s check:

Examples Meaning Structure
 Make a wish! “desire” Used as a noun.
 I wish you a happy birthday! You are saying you want the person to have happiness on their birthday. It is a common verb and can be used in the Simple Present or Simple Past.
 I wish I had a dog.

 

I wish I were rich.

 

I wish you were here.

–  You don’t have a dog but you want one.

–  You are not rich and you want to be rich.

–  The person is not here and you miss them.

 

WISH + SUBJECT + SIMPLE PAST to express you wanted things to be different.

(In this structure, when using the verb to be, the form used is were” for all the pronouns, including I, he, she and it. It is the standard grammar rule but it is possible to say I wish I was)

 

 I wish I had brought an umbrella.

 

 

I wish you had come with me.

–  You didn’t bring an umbrella and now it’s raining so you regret.

–  The person didn’t come with you and you tell them that it would be nice if they had.

 

WISH + SUBJECT + HAD + PARTICIPLE (3rd column) to express regret or sorrow.
