Hey you guys!
Today we are learning how we can ask questions in a softer, indirect way. You don’t sound so incisive when you do that. It’s a very common communication strategy and we use it without even noticing! So let us learn how to make them properly, ok?

Embedded questions are questions inside questions. That’s why it has this name!
For instance, if you want to ask someone if they know why the students don’t do their homework, instead of asking WHY DON’T STUDENTS DO THEIR HOMEWORK? you can say DO YOU KNOW WHY STUDENTS DON’T DO THEIR HOMEWORK?
So, by adding the question DO YOU KNOW you already sound more polite!
The thing is that, when you use embedded questions you have to pay attention to the word order! The second question must follow the affirmative structure, even though this is in a question, for the first question is already in the interrogative form.
Check more examples and pay attention to the structure:

| Embedded | Can you tell me how he found you?

| Embedded | Do you remember what she likes to eat?

|
| Normal question | Has she ever been abroad? |
| Embedded | Do you know if she has ever been abroad? |
