I want you to – Eu quero que você se F*D@!

I want you to

Do you know how o say: “Quero que você me ame” in English?

This what we are learning today.

Baixe essa aula em PDF: Lesson #19 – I Want You To

The structure for this sentence in English is different from Portuguese and this is another reason why translation sucks and does not help!

We would say: I want you to love me.

See how different it is?

Whenever you want to state that you want or need or beg someone to do something for you, this is the structure you use:

SUBJECT + WANT + OBJECT + VERB

You don’t necessarily need to use the verb WANT. The same structure goes with NEED, BEG, DARE and WOULD LIKE.

Check some examples:

I NEED YOU TO DO ME A FAVOR

I’D LIKE YOU TO STOP BOTHERING ME

The OBJECT can also be ANY PERSON. Just make sure you use the correct pronouns:

I NEED HIM TO CALL THE HOSPITAL RIGHT AWAY!

THEY WANT US TO DELIVER THE PRODUCT AT A DIFFERENT ADDRESS.

(always use the OBJECT PRONOUN, ok?)

The only thing you need to watch out for with this expression is: IF YOU TRANSLATE IT LITERALLY FROM PORTUGUESE, YOU WILL HAVE SOMETHING LIKE: I want that you love me (Quero que você me ame). PLEASE DON’T!

Tá, e agora?

There are many songs that have this structure. Can you remember any? Find songs and texts in which you get to practice this. I dare you to do it!
